OpenAI has expanded the availability of their new ChatGPT smartphone app to 45 countries just one week after initially launching only in the U.S. The artificial intelligence chatbot app was first made available in an additional 11 nations after a few days, then 33 more countries on Thursday.
The app is currently accessible in North America, South America, Western Europe, parts of Africa, Asia including India, and New Zealand. However, some large markets like Australia, China and Russia are still missing. OpenAI is likely planning more country releases in the future.
The ChatGPT app is currently only available for iOS devices, but an Android version is coming soon.
The quick expansion shows strong demand for the app. It reached #1 in the Apple App Store Productivity category in the U.S. where it remains today. Data shows over half a million downloads in just six days, beating the download rates of apps like Microsoft Edge and Bing after their release. This is the fastest any iOS app has been downloaded since Truth Social launched in February 2022.
The free version uses OpenAI's GPT-3.5 AI model while the $20 monthly subscription provides the more advanced GPT-4 model. However, it is unclear how many subscribers ChatGPT has gained so far.
