TIME Reveals Inaugural List of 100 Most Influential People in AI
TIME magazine has released its first-ever TIME100 AI list, profiling 100 of the top professionals who are driving innovation and impact in the field of artificial intelligence today.
The expansive list features pioneers, thinkers, executives, researchers, policymakers and creatives spanning countries worldwide who are influencing the current landscape and trajectory of AI technology.
To assemble the inaugural ranking, TIME's editors and reporters spent months soliciting nominations and input from AI industry leaders and dozens of expert sources. The final TIME100 AI list reflects a diverse cross-section of the people shaping AI advancements.
According to TIME Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs, "This group of 100 individuals is in many ways a map of the relationships and power centers driving the development of AI. They are rivals and regulators, scientists and artists, advocates and executives—the competing and cooperating humans whose insights, desires, and flaws will shape the direction of an increasingly influential technology."
The 2023 TIME100 AI list includes high-profile figures like Tesla founder Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Dario and Daniela Amodei of Anthropic, DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, Baidu co-founder Robin Li, as well as top executives from Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Intel and more.
Spanning generations, the youngest honoree is 18-year-old Sneha Revanur, recognized for leading the youth organization Encode Justice focused on ethical AI. At the other end is 76-year-old Geoffrey Hinton, an AI pioneer who helped develop key machine learning techniques and left Google this year to speak openly about AI dangers.
Over 40 women are featured, including prominent researchers Fei-Fei Li and Kate Crawford, AI ethics leaders like Timnit Gebru and Joy Buolamwini, and senior executives from companies like Intel, Google DeepMind, Anthropic and more.
Policymakers, government officials, professors, researchers focused on ethics and safety, as well as artists and creatives also feature prominently on the diverse list.
In the coming months, TIME plans to host a series of events centered around women leaders in AI, including talks at Dreamforce and an invite-only dinner. The newly launched TIME100 AI aims to highlight the many human dimensions shaping the rapidly evolving field.
