The Changing Face of Online Content
The researchers didn't stop at simply quantifying the amount of AIGT – they also conducted in-depth analyses to understand how this AI-generated content differs from human-written text. Their findings reveal some fascinating patterns:
Linguistic Differences: AI-generated text tends to be more formal and standardized, while human-written content shows greater variety and informality in language use.
Topic Preferences: On Medium, technology-related topics showed the highest rates of AI generation. This suggests that users with technical backgrounds may be more likely to embrace AI writing tools.
Engagement Levels: Human-written content generally received more likes and comments than AI-generated posts, indicating that readers may still prefer or more easily connect with content written by humans.
Author Characteristics: Users with fewer followers were more likely to produce AI-generated content. The study found that accounts with less than 1,000 followers had the highest average AAR at 54.02%.
"These patterns give us valuable insights into how AI is being used and perceived on social media," Dr. He notes. "It's clear that while AI can produce high-quality text, there are still elements of human-written content that resonate more strongly with readers."
