Meta, Microsoft Partner to Launch Open-Source AI Model LLaMA 2
Llama 2 model will be open-sourced and released for "research and commercial use."
Meta and Microsoft have partnered to launch an advanced AI language model called Llama 2. The technology is geared towards helping researchers and businesses improve their work through a next generation large language model.
The new collaboration comes after Meta launched the first version of Llama earlier this year. Llama stands for Large Language Model Meta AI.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the partnership in an Instagram post, sharing a photo of himself and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Zuckerberg said the Llama 2 model will be open-sourced and released for "research and commercial use."
The partnership aims to advance Meta's AI capabilities by leveraging Microsoft's expertise from investing billions into ChatGPT. AI language models like ChatGPT and Llama can generate human-like prose and answers using machine learning from vast amounts of text data.
While Meta has a large AI research team, they have been overshadowed by the success of models like ChatGPT. The Microsoft collaboration should help Meta catch up in the competitive generative AI space.
