Mercedes-Benz Making Cars Smarter with ChatGPT Integration
Mercedes-Benz is integrating ChatGPT, an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, into its MBUX voice assistant to make it more intuitive and helpful for drivers. The automaker is using Microsoft's Azure OpenAI Service to power ChatGPT within MBUX.
The ChatGPT integration will allow Mercedes drivers and passengers to get sports and weather updates, answers to questions, and control smart home devices using voice commands. Microsoft claims that ChatGPT's ecosystem will eventually enable tasks like restaurant reservations, movie ticket booking and more complex queries.
In a blog post, Mercedes said "Mercedes-Benz combines the best of both worlds, enhancing the validated data of MBUX Voice Assistant with the more natural dialogue format of ChatGPT. Users will experience a voice assistant that not only accepts natural voice commands but can also conduct conversations."
Mercedes customers in the U.S can join a 3 month beta program starting June 16, 2023 to test the new ChatGPT-powered voice assistant in over 900,000 vehicles equipped with MBUX. Customers can enroll by saying "Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program". Findings from the study will be used to improve the voice assistant and define future rollout strategies.
General Motors also confirmed in March that it is also exploring using ChatGPT in its vehicles as part of a collaboration with Microsoft.
