Google is testing a new AI tool named "Genesis" that can automatically create news articles based on provided data on any given topic such as current events.
Executives from News Corp., The Washington Post, and The New York Times were pitched demonstrations of this AI tool.
Google believes Genesis could help journalists by automating certain tasks, freeing them up to focus on other responsibilities.
However, a Google spokesperson clarified that the tool "is not intended to, and cannot replace the essential role of journalists."
Google spokeswoman Jenn Crider said the company is considering offering AI-powered tools to assist journalists, especially smaller publishers. But these tools would aim to augment journalists' work, not replace them, for example by suggesting headlines or writing styles.
Still, several news executives who saw Genesis found it "unsettling," ignoring the hard work that goes into crafting precise, well-written articles.
Some news organizations have faced criticism for AI-generated articles deemed to be riddled with errors, forcing public apologies.
While Associated Press uses AI to write earnings reports, it still relies on human journalists. AP has partnered with OpenAI for AI tech but has not shared its plans to use the technology.
For now, Google's Genesis remains in testing. It remains to be seen if it can truly aid journalists as Google intends, or if it will cause more issues.
