OpenAI's popular chatbot ChatGPT is giving users more control over how it responds with a new "custom instructions" feature. This allows users to provide preferences or requirements for ChatGPT to consider before generating responses.
The feature was initially only available to paid beta subscribers last month. But now OpenAI is rolling it out to all users free of charge. Customers provided feedback that starting conversations over each time was frustrating. Through discussions with users around the world, OpenAI better understands how steerability helps its models reflect diverse contexts and individual needs.
ChatGPT will remember your custom instructions for all future chats rather than having to repeat them each time. OpenAI gave the example of a teacher creating lesson plans - they wouldn't need to keep stating it's for third grade students.
Unfortunately, the new feature isn't available just yet in the EU and UK but OpenAI says it's coming soon.
The custom instructions can be accessed via different methods:
Via web browser - Users can go to settings and click on Beta features. Then click opt into custom instructions and the custom instructions will appear when you click on your name.
Via Android or iOS apps - Open the ChatGPT app and click on New Features to turn on Custom instructions. Then your Custom instructions will appear in the settings.
